The wide range of students who attended McGill since the 1880s have continually shaped and reshaped this institution. From the struggle to admit women in the mid-1880s through democratization and the end of in loco parentis in the 1960s to long-time campaigns to promote diversity and inclusion, McGill's history has been characterized by student-led change.

Suzanne Morton has taught in the Department of History and Classical Studies since 1992 and for much of this time has introduced undergraduates to original research through work on the history of McGill. She is the author of three monographs, three edited collections, and a forthcoming book on the history of the lobster fishery.
