The Friends of the McGill Library and Stratford Festival are delighted to partner once again to present the 2024 annual Shakespeare Lecture. The event will feature actor, playwright, teacher, and McGill graduate, Jessica B. Hill in conversation with Professor Paul Yachnin, Tomlinson Professor of Shakespeare Studies at McGill University.

Their discussion will address her preparations to play Viola in Stratford's 2024 production of Twelfth Night, as well as her recent play, The Dark Lady, a love duet which spans the breadth of Shakespeare's canon and reclaims Emilia Bassano's story (the possible dark-skinned lady of the sonnets). Both a love letter to Shakespeare and a challenge to our conventional view of 'the Bard', the play is to be published this spring.

This event is hybrid. Registrants have the opportunity to select in-person or online attendance below. A YouTube link will be sent to those who register for virtual attendance.

Originally from Montreal, Canada, Jessica B. Hill has been part of the Stratford Festival for eight seasons. Having most recently starred there as Helen in All's Well That Ends Well and Lady Anne in Richard III in 2022, she is now preparing to play Viola in Twelfth Night and Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet in the 2024 season.

2023 marked Jessica's debut as a playwright. Her two first plays, Pandora and The Dark Lady had their world premiere productions in 2023, with The Dark Lady enjoying its second production just a few months later. Both plays are slated to be published with Scirocco Drama in 2024.

Currently writing her next two plays, she works as an actor in both English and French in theatre, voice, games, film and television and is a visiting teacher at the National Theatre School.
