MAA Ottawa: Fall Hike - Kingsmere Trail to King Mountain

Saturday, September 23, 2023
10 AM to 1 PM EDT

The McGill Alumni Association of Ottawa invites you to join us on a fall hike on the Kingsmere Trail to King Mountain in Gatineau Park starting from Parking Lot 7.

Get to know some fellow McGillians as you hike through a beautiful forested area towards the summit of King Mountain. You'll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills.

Starting from P7, the 6.5 km hike with about 200-metre elevation gain will connect to the King Mountain loop with interpretation panels and 10 lookouts of the Ottawa Valley and downtown Ottawa. The interpretive panels describe the local flora and fauna. This is a moderate level of difficulty hike with steep stairs and rocks.

The hilly landscape around King Mountain is part of the Canadian Shield, one of the oldest and hardest rock formations in the world. King Mountain is on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, which in this area is marked by the cliffs of the Eardley Escarpment.

The First Geodetic Survey Station National Historic Site is on King Mountain at an elevation of 344 metres (1,129 feet). It was the first geodetic station, or triangulation point, established in Canada for land surveys.

We will meet at the trailhead at 9:45 am with the plan to set off at 10:00 am. The trail takes an average of 2-3 hours to complete, and we will be allocating time for photo-taking. After the hike, for those interested, we plan to assemble at a nearby local restaurant for refreshments (at your own expense).

Spaces are limited. Register today!
