ONLINE: Launch of M-GEN alumni tech and innovation group

Technological disruption has had a profound global impact on society and business.

The founding members of M-GEN: Generation McGill - McGill Global Tech and Innovation Group invite you to join accomplished McGill alumni in tech and innovation for a virtual conversation on tech disruption and preparing future-ready leaders.

What are some of the key challenges facing industry, what lessons have been learned, and how will this tech disruption impact how students need to prepare to become the next generation of future-ready leaders?

This launch event of the new alumni group M-GEN will feature McGill Principal Suzanne Fortier, BSc'72, PhD'76, and a discussion with leading alumni in tech: Lorna Borenstein, BCL/LLB'92, Founder and CEO of Grokker; Martin Kon, BCom'93, CFO at YouTube; and Amyn Thawer, LLB/MBA'98, VP, Global Compliance & Integrity, at LinkedIn. The event will be moderated by Professor Jim Nicell, Dean of McGill's Faculty of Engineering and opening remarks will be given by Shari Hatch Jones, BA'96, an M-GEN founding member and dedicated McGill volunteer.

This event is co-hosted by the McGill Engine Centre and the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship.

This event is co-hosted by the McGill Alumni Association, the McGill Engine Centre out of the Faculty of Engineering and the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship out of the Desautels Faculty of Management, and will be open to McGill students from these faculties to inspire them to think about tech and innovation, in the spirit of M-GEN.


About the speakers and moderator:

Lorna Borenstein, BCL/LLB'92, is CEO and Founder of Grokker, the award-winning innovative engagement engine that powers both life-changing outcomes for employees and the results Fortune 1000 clients demand. Martin Kon, BCom'93, is CFO of YouTube, reporting to both Google/Alphabet's Corporate CFO and YouTube's CEO. This team includes all strategy, finance, business operations and commercial data analytics functions for YouTube globally, with teams in the SF Bay Area, NYC, LA, London, and Singapore.

Amyn Thawer, LLB/MBA'98, is the VP, Global Compliance & Integrity at LinkedIn Corporation. He is responsible for strengthening and integrating a compliance function that can keep pace with the company's rapid growth around the world, but also stays true to the company's start-up culture and founding values. In addition to compliance programs and investigations, his team is responsible for enterprise risk management and managing internal audit engagements. He's also the executive sponsor for LinkedIn's product and workplace efforts around disability inclusion and accessibility.

Professor Jim Nicell has a background in chemical engineering and a PhD in environmental engineering. Since joining McGill's Department of Civil Engineering in 1992, he has served in many different capacities, including roles as Associate Dean (Student Affairs) and as Associate Vice-Principal (University Services), and he is now in his second term as Dean of McGill's Faculty of Engineering. He is a registered professional engineer and in recognition of his leadership in the profession over the course of his career, he was named as Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2018.

Shari Hatch Jones, BA'96, is a Marketing Executive and Leadership Coach, working to transform businesses and leadership teams in the Bay Area with over twenty-five years of senior business leadership and coaching experience. Shari is the Co-Chair of the C100, a global community of Canadian leaders in technology committed to accelerating the Canadian technology ecosystem.
