IRS requirements for Canadians doing business in the U.S. (Faculty of Management)

Wednesday, September 16, 2009
8 AM to 9:30 AM

Canadian individuals, companies and their employees who do business in the United States on a frequent basis may be surprised to learn that they may soon have to report detailed financial information to the IRS about their Canadian bank and financial accounts. There are also expanded filing requirements for American individuals and companies who are already subject to these rules. Canadians and Americans could face hefty U.S. fines and potentially even criminal penalties if they don’t comply. Montreal-based KPMG tax professionals, Martha Kittell and Marc Belanger, will discuss the rules and answer questions. This event is sponsored by the McGill Desautels Faculty of Management Program for International Competitiveness, KPMG Canada and the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada (Quebec Chapter).

Martha Kittell heads KPMG’s International Executive Services practice in Montreal, focusing on U.S. tax issues for Americans working and living overseas. Martha has 19 years of expatriate experience and has had the opportunity to serve large and small expatriate programs, both inbound to and outbound from the United States. Her experience includes assignments in Paris, France serving international law firms, in Northern Virginia serving Rolls Royce and British Aerospace, in Stamford, Connecticut serving General Electric, and as IES practice leader in Boston, Massachusetts.

Marc Belanger heads KPMG’s Enterprise Practice within U.S. Tax Services in Montreal, specializing on the U.S. tax needs of privately held companies. Marc has 12 years of experience in US Tax. He holds a Bachelor Degree of Civil Law from Ottawa University, a Masters degree in International and European community Law from Toulouse University in France and a Masters degree in Tax from the University of Sherbrooke. He is a co-author of "Faire affaire aux États-Unis - Aspects fiscaux américains et canadiens", a book published by L'ordre des CGA du Québec. He has taught US Tax at the University of Sherbrooke and at HEC.
