Join the McGill Black Alumni Association in collaboration with McGill's First Peoples' House for a community-building conversation on the topic of renaming and reclaiming symbols steeped in a legacy of racism and discrimination.

Even before the campaign to #ChangeTheName and recent efforts to #TakeJamesDown, students have been calling for a more honest recounting of the narratives we've curated to depict McGill's legacy. By unpacking the "politics" behind the politics of remembering, this moderated discussion between Black and Indigenous alumni, academics, and activists will explore how we choose which stories to commemorate and which to append as footnotes to a more nuanced history implicating slavery and colonialism.

Open to all, join us for a timely dialogue on McGill's Black and Indigenous history, as we shed light on the most obscure corners of our alma mater's past. By engaging with divergent perspectives on the telling of history, we will consider the potential of (re)moving, replacing, and reimagining symbols of oppression as making history - rather than erasing the past.
