If you miss insightful classroom discussions, or if you just love to read, this is your chance to discover great, thought-provoking books and meet new people! We will be discussing David Adams Richards’s novel "Mercy Among the Children", winner of the prestigious Giller Prize, Canada’s richest literary award for fiction.
Having endured more suffering as a child than any adult should face, Sydney Henderson vows never to harm another soul. Turning his back on the violent alcoholism of his upbringing, self-educated Sydney wins the honest respect of the beautiful Elly and the children they bear. Honest respect, however, is rarely a match for fear and base opportunism. Facing the wrath of a small community eager for a scapegoat, Sydney, his wife, and their children struggle to balance innocence and guilt against the importance of family and the necessity for survival.
