Some suggest that science is the closest one can get to truth, while others point to it as simply a subjective activity. So how do we access the knowledge that science is supposed to provide us with? Is information lost between scientists and the public? How do we use this knowledge to understand our interactions with the natural world in our everyday lives? Can we use the resources and understanding of the scientific world to make a significant impact on the greater good?

Guest:

David M. Secko is an assistant professor at Concordia’s Department of Journalism. His amazement at the speed at which an amoeba could crawl led him to a PhD (2004) in microbiology from UBC. Upon finishing, he started writing about science. Now at Concordia University, he is working to give journalists new tools to communicate about science, while also studying social implications of scientific research.

Sara Finley holds an MSc in Bioresource Engineering from McGill and a BA in International Development Studies from the University of Calgary. For the past five years, Sara has worked in environmental research, green building and water management. She now works as an environmental consultant.
