Books on the Beach - NEW DATE!

Tuesday, July 19, 2016
6 PM to 7 PM

After a wonderful first meeting, we've decided to continue our quest to improve our literary prowess and prevent the decline of our vocabulary. Join us for our next meeting, where we will be reading H is for Hawk by Helene MacDonald (book description below).

If you've never heard of the Vancouver McGill Alumni Book Club before, we're a group of alumni who are attempting to expand our reading material beyond our friend's Facebook posts, lengthy emails from our family and/or road signs - otherwise known as reading books. We're friendly, fun and we love newcomers, so make sure to drop in!

Book Description:
A bestseller throughout the English-speaking world and a multiple award winner, H Is for Hawk is the exquisitely written story of one woman's journey to the limits of grief and love.

As a child Helen Macdonald was determined to become a falconer. She learned the arcane terminology and read all the classic books, including T.H. White's tortured masterpiece, The Goshawk, which describes White's struggle to train a hawk as a spiritual contest. When her father dies and she is knocked sideways by grief, she becomes obsessed with the idea of training her own goshawk. She buys Mabel for 800 on a Scottish quayside and takes her home to Cambridge, embarking on the long, strange business of trying to train this wildest of animals.

H Is for Hawk is a record of a spiritual journeyan unflinchingly honest account of Macdonald's struggle with grief during the difficult process of the hawk's taming and her own untaming. It's a book about memory, nature, and how it might be possible to try to reconcile death with life and love.
