Art, artists and econometrics: the numerical study of culture and uniqueness

We are excited to invite you to our second lecture series featuring the amazing Professor Galbraith! The Professor will transport us to the intersection of where the 'elusive art world' meets economics.

The unique works of creative artists might be thought to be among the things least susceptible to economic or statistical reasoning. However, the field of cultural economics contains many examples in which data from art auctions, estate records and artists' biographies have been used to get some firm information on topics that are often the subject of speculation.

In this quick helicopter tour of the empirical side of the field, Professor Galbraith will present a few examples of these ideas (and their relation to more general themes): estimating the creative peak ages of artists; relating these to the style of work produced; investigating the peer effects of clustering in the major artistic centers such as Paris and London; attempting to reproduce the knowledge of art or wine experts through purely numerical information; and accounting for selection biases in estimating the financial return to artworks.

Professor John W. Galbraith is the chair of the Economics Department at McGill University, where he has taught since 1987. No stranger to the United Kingdom, John has a D.Phil. in econometrics from Oxford University. His fields of interest include time series econometrics, and empirical macroeconomics and finance. His recent work concerns tails of distrubutions and extreme events in financial markets, probability forcast evaluation, using electrinically recorded data in economic monitoring nad forecasting, and the valuation of unique objects.
