In brief, the UP Series is a British TV miniseries that has become world-famous. It began in 1964 with interviews of 14 selected children. The premise of the film was taken from the Jesuit motto "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man".

Since then every seven years the same individuals have been interviewed, the latest episode was made this year and is titled 56 UP. The study group will examine some of the themes raised, e.g.: coming-of-age, issues of class, the 60s sexual revolution, marriage, parenthood, and so on. Using portions of these films, we will examine many of these issues, in the light of our own lived experience. We will start by watching the latest available film (49 UP) widely distributed on DVD.

We will select one or more of these individuals to follow on film at different stages of their lives. We will then discuss some of the issues raised, and, perhaps, relate them to our own experiences. One of the goals is to examine how our world has evolved in a social sense since 1964, using personal experience as a source.
