The Habsburg Monarchy emerged from the Napoleonic Wars as a leading power in Europe. It was a multiethnic empire that was destined to be shaken apart by rising nationalism in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It finally exploded in the mayhem of WW I. At the same time, Vienna saw seminal developments in psychology, music and literature. We will look at the forces that held it together and how and why they withered.

Participants will be expected to make a 20- to 25-minute presentation on a topic within the scope of the study group. A bibliography will be provided before term starts. The McGill and other libraries have many books on the history of the Habsburgs, or Austria.
