Study Groups and Lectures: Britain Under the Stuarts (1603-1714)

Tuesday, January 15, 2013
2 PM to 4 PM

An apparently unstable period in England: explosive plots against the first Stuart king, the next executed, another run out of the country, a nine-year civil war, eleven years with no monarch, a playboy king, plagues, a "Great Fire," a Dutchman sharing the throne, and more. Were the Stuarts that bad? Exploring various aspects of the period such as political and social environment, art, architecture, leisure, the economy, law, the poor, health, religion, we can evaluate the progress of England under the Stuarts.

Participants are expected to make a presentation of 20 to 30 minutes on a topic within the scope of this study group. A suggested list of topics will be available by email from the moderator or in hard copy in the office two weeks before the first session. Bibliography on the topic is extensive.
