This five-week study group will trace the evolution of Georgia O'Keeffe's artistic vision from 1916 until 1929 when she began to spend summers in New Mexico. Her early art training was as an educator but when she moved to New York and viewed the work of the European and American Modernists at the Photo-Secessionist Gallery 29, she decided to pursue a career as an independent artist. Her innate talent was recognized by Alfred Stieglitz, the gallery owner. He was to become the most important figure in her life for 30 years, not only as her husband but as the promoter of her work, and the person who shaped her public persona with the many photographs of her that he exhibited. This study group is part of an extensive exploration of the many different facets of O'Keeffe's work that will continue in the spring session of MCLL and perhaps culminate with a visit in June to the Hyde Museum in Glens Falls. The museum is mounting a special exhibit from June 15 to September 15 of the many paintings done by O'Keeffe during the period she lived in New York City, with summers spent in the Lake George region.
