Global Food Security: McGill Conference on Global Food Security: Public Lecture Forum SOLD OUT (Macdonald Campus)

Tuesday, October 4, 2011
5 PM to 6:30 PM

It is evident that the gains made in food production over the past few years are now rapidly eroding due to higher global food prices (37% higher, on average, than one year ago), rising food price volatility, increased energy costs, reduced crop yields due to recent natural disasters in many parts of the world, and political instability in some regions.

These risks and threats to food security are most serious in countries that depend heavily on food imports to meet the nutritional needs of their populations, and where food producers are faced with rising costs of production and limited access to markets. The 500-million small-farmers in developing countries who support almost 2-billion people - or one third of the world's population - continue to be severely affected by these risks and threats.

The Fourth McGill Conference on Global Food Security Public Lecture Forum will address the risks and threats to food security. Join international experts as they present their unique perspectives.

The Third Global Food Security Public Lecture Forum drew over 300 participants from all fields of interest to examine the challenges of water scarcity and malnutrition in food security. The 2011 Public Lecture Forum promises to be as impactful.

The Third McGill Conference on Global Food Security highlighted the fact that world food security must remain an international priority and that the current momentum for action and investment must be sustained in order to respond adequately to the protracted food crisis and the further challenges to food security.

Global agricultural research and development systems must result in increased agricultural production, commercialization and income generation for small holders to improve not just lives but livelihoods.
