Alumni Talk in Hong Kong: The Latest in Epigenetics Research

Thursday, May 9, 2024
6:30 PM to 8 PM HKT

How does the social and physical environment talk to our DNA and how does it impact us?

The last century has seen a proliferation of genetics research and genetic information culminating in the sequencing and decoding of the human genome. This has led to the dominance of a deterministic viewpoint that genetic differences between people explain the interindividual variation in behavior and temperament.

Research in the last decade and a half from Dr. Szyf's laboratory at McGill University has described biological processes that link experience and our genes. These processes involve the "epigenetic" marking of genes. Epigenetic principles impact our understanding of behavior and physical health and guide us toward new strategies for prevention, intervention, and early detection.

Join us on May 9 for a evening talk with Dr. Moshe Szyf on the latest in epigenetics research.

Admission is free but prior registration is mandatory due to the consulate's security measures. Seats are limited so please register early to avoid disappointment.

RSVP directly with alvin.chung@mail.mcgill.ca by no later than May 7.

We are very grateful to the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macao for their venue support.

About the Speaker
Dr. Moshe Szyf is a pioneer in epigenetics, and the Founder, Chairman, CEO, and CSO of HKG epiTherapeutics at the Hong Kong Science Park.

He was the GlaxoSmithKline - CIHR Chair in Pharmacology and James McGill Professor under the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at McGill University. He was a founding co-director of McGill's Sackler Institute for Epigenetics and Psychobiology. Dr. Szyf holds Fellowships with the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and he is the author of around 300 influential papers and a much sought-after speaker, including the Nobel Forum and TED Talk on DNA and early life experiences.

He was recognized as the Quebec Scientist of the Year (2009) and featured in the NIMH Director's Innovation Speaker Series (2012), underscoring his impact on science and society. He's the inventor of the first patent in epigenetics and a founding figure in behavioral and psychiatric epigenetics.
