The McGill University Faculty of Education invites faculty, graduates, and friends to attend the Inaugural Phyllis Shapiro Memorial Lecture featuring guest speaker, Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Established to honour the memory of Dr. Phyllis Shapiro, this annual lecture series will highlight topics in the subject of education, one of her passions.

Details

Rosalie Silberman Abella was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004 after 12 years as a justice on the Ontario Court of Appeal. She is the first Jewish woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

During her distinguished career, she has made significant contributions in the areas of labour relations, law reform, access to legal services by the disabled and human rights.

The recipient of 23 honorary degrees, Justice Abella has been very active in Canadian judicial education, organizing the first judicial seminar to involve all levels of the judiciary, the first judicial seminar to include persons outside the legal profession, the first national education program for administrative tribunals, and the first national conference for Canada’s female judges. She has been a visiting professor at both McGill and the University of Toronto.
